What to expect during the first session
In the first session, an assessment will be conducted. This involves talking with and getting to know you and asking you a number of questions about different areas of your life, in order to try to understand your current difficulties.
The assessment may use a variety of methods including interviews, observations, psychological tests and questionnaires.
After the Assessment
An individual formulation will be developed from the information gained during the assessment, incorporating all the possible factors that may have caused, contributed to or maintained your current difficulties. Recommendations about how to proceed will be discussed with you.
At the beginning of a course of therapy sessions, the goals of treatment are agreed (e.g. to learn how to cope with and overcome panic attacks). A certain number of sessions will be offered (typically 6 sessions initially) and at the end of these, the work undertaken will be reviewed and further sessions may be offered if required.
